Shopify shipping zones and rates, explained clearly

Learn how Shopify markets, shipping zones, flat rates, conditions, carrier rates, and customer destinations work together.

Short answer

A Shopify shipping zone is a group of destinations that share a set of shipping rates. A rate is the delivery option and price a customer can receive when the order and address satisfy the zone’s conditions. Markets decide where the store sells; zones and profiles decide how eligible products ship; rates decide what the customer pays. Keeping those layers distinct makes setup and troubleshooting much easier.

Markets answer where you sell

An active market controls whether a country or region participates in the storefront experience. Shipping coverage still needs to exist for the products and destinations inside that market.

Zones group destinations

A zone can represent one country, multiple countries, a group of regions, or a postcode-defined area when supported by the setup. Every zone contains the rates customers in that area may qualify for.

Avoid overlapping or ambiguous coverage. Give zones operational names that explain their purpose, not just internal abbreviations.

Rates can be flat or calculated

Flat rates are prices the merchant defines, optionally with order-value or weight conditions. Carrier- or app-calculated rates are returned dynamically using order and destination data. Free shipping is another rate outcome and can have minimum-order conditions.

  • Flat rate: predictable amount you set.
  • Price-based: applies within subtotal conditions.
  • Weight-based: applies within cart-weight conditions.
  • Carrier/app-calculated: returned dynamically.
  • Free shipping: a zero-price rate with optional thresholds.

Profiles decide which products use which rates

The general profile covers products unless they are assigned elsewhere. Custom profiles let special products use different origins, zones, and rates. Mixed carts can combine results, so test how multiple profiles behave together.

Questions

Can one country be in more than one shipping zone?

Design zones to avoid conflicting coverage inside the same profile. Postcode or regional segmentation should be explicit and testable.

What is the difference between a market and a shipping zone?

A market controls where and how you sell; a shipping zone groups destinations that receive a set of delivery rates.

Does a storefront calculator create zones?

ShipCalc does not create zones. It displays eligible outcomes from the Shopify shipping setup.
