Shopify shipping profiles: when and how to use them

Understand general and custom shipping profiles, product assignment, origins, mixed carts, and common profile mistakes.

Short answer

A Shopify shipping profile connects a set of products and fulfilment locations to their shipping zones and rates. Most products can stay in the general profile. Create a custom profile when a defined group—such as furniture, fragile items, digital-plus-physical bundles, or oversized goods—needs different delivery rules. The main operational risk is forgetting that a product, variant, or location moved into a profile with incomplete zone coverage.

General versus custom profiles

The general profile is the default home for shippable products. A custom profile isolates products that need a different rate structure. Keep the number of profiles as small as the business allows; every extra profile increases mixed-cart and maintenance complexity.

When a custom profile is justified

Use a custom profile when a group has a material, stable shipping difference that cannot be expressed cleanly inside the current profile.

  • Oversized or freight products
  • Fragile or specialist handling
  • Different fulfilment origin
  • Supplier-direct or dropship items
  • Products excluded from selected regions

Why mixed carts need deliberate testing

A cart containing products from more than one profile may combine rate outcomes. The final price can differ from what a merchant expects by looking at either product alone. Test the combinations customers actually buy, including free-shipping thresholds and multi-origin orders.

How profiles affect storefront estimates

A product-page calculator can request the rate context for one item, while a cart calculator uses the assembled basket. That is why a product-page estimate and final cart estimate can legitimately differ. Make the widget wording clear and let checkout remain the final confirmation.

Checklist

  • Keep ordinary products in the general profile
  • Document why every custom profile exists
  • Confirm all fulfilment locations
  • Duplicate required zones intentionally
  • Test single-profile carts
  • Test mixed-profile carts
  • Review after adding products or locations
  • Retest storefront estimates after profile changes

Questions

Should every product category have its own profile?

Usually no. Create a profile only when the category has a real shipping requirement that differs from the general setup.

Why did a rate disappear after moving a product?

The destination zone, origin, or applicable rate may not exist in the product’s new profile.

Can product and cart estimates differ?

Yes. The cart may include more products, profiles, quantities, or origins than the individual product request.
